Flyer

I created this flyer to encourage women who are currently going through domestic violence to seek aid.

Elika's Domestic Violence Media Campaign

Brochure

I chose a brochure as my second genre because I felt that for a topic as serious as domestic violence, there needed to be as much information as possible in a small, easy to cary way. I also included the number and website to The Refuge House and The Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence as well.  If you would like to see the full pdf, click the link below.

Video

This is my version of a PSA standing against domestic violence. I was inspired by the spoken word video by UCLA's Black Student Union. I used this video to encourage people to report their abuse.

Reflection

So here we are, at the end of the semester. I had first joined this class on the third day of drop add week. I did not know what this class was about but I chose it just because I needed it. I did not know what to expect from this class other than the fact that it would count as my secondary English class. Yes, my experience with this class accomplished that but it also made me more aware of Tallahassee.
This class has also helped me improve my reading and writing skills. By reading the assigned reading I had learned to read more critically and absorb more of the information that I later put into my essays. Through the workshops, I had learned from my peers what worked in my essays and what did not work, thus making me write more effectively.
Over the course of the semester, we were required to perform five hours of community service with our organization. However, due to many communication issues with my supervisor at The Refuge House I could not complete my hours. I was actually pretty disappointed with that because I love community service. I feel that it is important to give back to the community that you are apart of and was upset that I could not do that. Even though I could not complete my hours I still learned a lot. I learned that even though people ask for help, they might not necessarily make use of what or who is provided to them.
Although I did not know what this class was about when I had signed up for it, it ended up changing me as a community member and a writer. It changed me as a community member by giving me the need to put a lot of effort into what goes on around me. Whether it is in my class community, university community, or in the Tallahassee community. It inspired me to become more involved.
I feel the project that taught me the most was the Media Campaign. The media campaign taught me how to specifically talk to my audience and narrow it down from a generic audience to a more specific audience that would benefit more from the information that I provide in my essays. It also taught me that certain situations work better for different genres, for example, flyers are a great way of spreading word about a cause or organization but brochures are better for the spreading of information.
I learned a lot over the course of this semester. One of these things was how to work with a group. Before this class I had rarely worked with a group for a project, especially in a community service project. This will help me in the future because I learned to communicate more effectively with people and to be timelier with assignments.
Heather Lang has taught me many things over the course of the semester, both inside and outside of the classroom. She has not only taught me to be a better writer and reader, but also a better member of my various communities. She made the class entertaining through her ability to talk to her students like people and not in a way that made you feel looked down on because you were her pupil. I had never really enjoyed going to English classes but because of her guidance I had found a new love of English.
