My main goal in creating these works is to find a creative way to raise awareness and reach out to young college women who are experiencing abuse. With this media campaign, composed of three different genres, I hope to help victims and attract them to the Refuge House organization where they can recieve help and guidance. I want to let every young woman out there realize that they are never alone!

Raising Awareness: Video

This is a video I made a few weeks ago. I wanted to make a video that raises awareness but is still entertaining. I wanted a video that tells a story. This video is about two friends that end up struggling with the same issue and never even knew about it! You are never alone! Feel free to share this video!

You Are Never Alone: Flyer

I know flyers tend to be somewhat "basic", but I felt as thoguh they were more than suiteable for this particular issue. Flyers raise awareness. Whether it is handed to you or you just see it on the street or online, you will read, at the very least, two words. Thats all it takes. JOIN REFUGE HOUSE TODAY!

Reaching Out: Business Card

This is one of my favorite ideas. Business Cards. So simple, yet, can accomplish so much. This business card has all the information a victim would need to reach out to Refuge House. However, it is a sneaky way to keep the victims issues a secret. The business card can be kept in a secret place or always handy. Whenever they need help, they can reach out without anyone knowing. This is important. They can be independent but still reach out. The 24 hour hotline is on the card as well as the address. CONTACT REFUGE HOUSE TODAY!

About a week before class started I got an email that I had to complete 5 service hours in order to complete this course. Although that really is not a lot, something about that email made me realize that this class was going to entail a lot more outside work then any other English class I have ever taken, or am going to take. Was I right? Yes. I genuinely enjoyed sitting inside the classroom and listening to what everyone had to say. Once I walked out, however, that is when I actually had to begin to do a lot of work. My writing has changed so much over the past semester. I really have never written so many reflective essays in my life. I actually enjoy writing these. I literally just sit down and pour all my thoughts about my writing onto a paper with no limitations, well… besides a page limit. Usually it takes me a long time to reflect. As the class progressed, these essays became easier and easier. So, in conclusion, yes, this reflective essay has been my easiest.
This class has changed me as a writer in many ways. One thing that really stood out to me about Ms. Lang is that she doesn’t really pay so much attention to grammar mistakes. I saw that as really cool. I think it made my job as a writer easier. I felt as though I was less pressured and could express my thoughts a lot easier than I normally would. The peer workshops really helped my writing out as well as the conferences. The second conference, literally, made my research paper one hundred times better. This class taught me to take a deep breath and enjoy writing, which I can genuinely say, now, that I enjoy it more than I ever have.
The project that taught me the most was this last project. Working with Wix was so enjoyable. I know during the presentations many students complained that it was hard, but I enjoyed it. I now know that I can use Wix for any other class or projects that require me to create a website of some sort. Also, since I am a Media/Communications major, working with all these types of media was more than enjoyable to me. It also taught me how to advertise something, in this case my organization.
Although this was the class that I stressed for the most, it was also one of my favorite classes. Throughout the semester I might have cursed the amount of work we were given, maybe. Now that I look back, however, I can say that this course taught me the most about the community, myself as a writer, and writing in general. I know that I will take all the lessons I have learned with me onto other classes.
If I designed this class, I would have probably been more than stressed. After the presentations on the last class, I realized that this class was a lot of work not only for us as the students, but for our teacher as well. One thing I would change about this course is the amount of projects and outside work. Maybe collaborating the last two projects into one, and or removing the service contract. One thing I really appreciated about this class was the size. I feel as though even one more student would have made things way too hectic. The small classroom environment was more than necessary for this type of course.
The most important thing I learned in this class was how to reflect on my own work, as well as the benefits it provides. As I would write my reflections I would realize some mistakes in my paper or maybe things I wanted to add in my project and I would go back and edit my works. I felt as though the reflection essays really made me think about the work I was submitting. It made me analyze my work from a different, deeper perspective. Overall, the reflective essays might have just saved my grade in this class.
This being my last reflective essay I wanted to say thank you to Ms. Lang for all the work you put into this course, which was probably double the work I put into it. I’ve also never really had a teacher who genuinely listened to her students and was so accessible and understanding. That really helped my experience in this class.
